Holy and Great Week in Cancún

blog.by C21 Caribbean blog.datep 06/04/2023

This Sunday began the holy week with the so-called "Palm Sunday"; If you are a parishioner who is interested in living Holy Week to the fullest, but also resting, or interested in doing something different, we recommend the following activities and places in the city of Cancun, in our beautiful state of Quintana Roo.

  • Attend the mass of "The Lord's Supper". On Thursday, the Catholic churches, in the evening or night, celebrate a special mass, where the last supper that the prophet Jesus had with his apostles is remembered and commemorated, on the same night that he was to be delivered. This event moves us to meditate on what is being experienced at that moment, and to reflect on life and our spiritual growth.
  • On the other hand, if you are in the city of Cancun, and you want to take advantage of the sunny hours, you can visit one of our many beautiful beaches such as: "Playa Las perlas", "Playa Conchitas", "Playa Tortugas", " Playa Linda”, “Playa Langosta”, “Playa Ancha”, “Playa Gaviota azul”, “Playa Chacmool”, “Playa Blanca”, “Playa Marlín”, and “Playa San Miguelito”. You can arrive by car, take a taxi or take the bus route called Ruta 1, which can take you through the hotel zone, so you can access to the beaches for free and enjoy the beautiful turquoise blue ocean.

  • Attend the Via Crucis, which is a representation of the path traveled by Jesus, before being crucified. This event is very famous, and it is even broadcast on television to remind us of the sacrifice of Jesus and the historical, cultural and spiritual impact that it had and continues to have year after year in all the parishioners.
  • If, on the other hand, you want a place to lose yourself in your thoughts, you can certainly take a ferry to Isla Mujeres, it will take approximately 30 minutes to cross from Cancun to the island. Meanwhile, you can enjoy a moment of reflection looking at the beautiful Caribbean sea. There are two very famous and efficient ferry service companies: The Xcaret Xailing ferry (blue) and the Ultramar ferry (yellow). It can be taken at km 4.5 of the hotel zone of Cancun (ask for schedules and prices). Ultramar also has another service station in Puerto Juárez. (Also ask about discounts for Quintana Roo residents and senior citizens by presenting your INAPAM ID.) And of course, enjoy the quiet beaches of Isla Mujeres.

  • On Saturday, called “glory Saturday”. We turn the page and go from serious and tense moments to calmer moments, but not for that reason less important. It is a transition from the pain generated by the crucifixion and death of Christ, which gradually turns into faith. The faith of his mother, Mary, placed in the resurrection of Jesus. On this day in the church, a fire blessing ceremony is held, where the lights are turned off and the Easter Proclamation is recited, which is a poem that talks about Jesus, the paschal candle is lit, specific stories about salvation are read, Psalms are read as well, and songs are sung. Without a doubt, it is an unforgettable experience, which fills the heart of the parishioner with fire.
  • This day you can also choose to take some time during the day and have a picnic with your family or friends in front of the Nichupté lagoon, in "Jardín del Arte", free of charge. You will have a natural and relaxed view and you will be able to share this great day with your loved ones. Sometimes there are small bazaars or stalls selling food, household items, and decorations.

  • Sunday, day of mass. Christ triumphs over death, by celebrating his resurrection, we celebrate ourselves as we are, we accept ourselves as human beings, with mistakes, with errors, with defects; and this acceptance liberate and motivates us. This day refreshes ourselves and encourages us to move forward despite the adversities that life presents. Do not miss the opportunity to recharge yourself with joy and energy on this very special day.
  • Once you decide what to do this Sunday, we also recommend taking a means of transportation that goes to the downtown area of the city and enjoy "Parque de las Palapas", where you will find restaurants, cafeterias, and different stalls selling snacks and Mexican appetizers, at reasonable prices. For children, they can also find rental of small motorized cars (toys), since this park has a large esplanade to run, dance and explore, while enjoying a drink or food. Preferably, in the afternoon or evening, when the sun is setting.
