Say Hello to the SUN with precaution

blog.by C21 Caribbean blog.datep 03/05/2022

The sun is a great trigger for vitamin D, because the skin, when making contact with its light, generates this vitamin. This vitamin is useful for strengthening the bones and keeping them healthy. However, we cannot stay in the sun for a long time, since too much exposure would make us sick.

That is why we give you some recommendations to enjoy the sun in Cancun or wherever you are, without suffering in the attempt.

1. Hydration

The best way to hydrate will always be with purified water. Soft drinks and flavored waters will make you feel good when you drink them, but they will make you thirstier due to the sugar contained in them. If you've already overexposed yourself to the sun, an oral rehydration solution could make you feel better. The most recommended are powdered, as they prevent dehydration and are very useful in cases of diarrhea. These contain a mixture of elements, such as salts and minerals, that allow the body to replenish lost fluids.

2. UV Protection

Today, there is a wide variety of sunscreens, even eco-friendly. Compare specifications of your options and choose the best. If you already know your Sun Protection Factor (SPF), choose the one that suits your skin or ask your pharmacist for a suggestion of the best option for you.

Another UV protection complement is the technological fabrics used to make swimsuits, among other garments, to protect yourself from the sun, which have a filter, preventing damage to your skin cells. Opt for long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Don't forget to also protect your head with a cap or hat and your eyes with sunglasses, also with a UV 400 factor (preferably). For this type of clothing, an Ultraviolet Protection Factor of 50, UPF 50, is recommended to block ultraviolet A (UVA) and ltraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Ask for them in specialized sports stores or in stores with swimsuits for sale, for sports use.

3. Time

Give your body time to get some rest from the sun and recover. If it's recreational time, you can choose many other activities that don't require direct exposure to the sun. If you are at the beach, you can enjoy your time at sunrise or sunset. Staying in the sun for longer than it should can lead to exhaustion and irritability. If you have young children and they are in a bad mood, it may not be a tantrum, but heat.

4. Coolness

In places like Riviera Maya and Cancun, for example, it is important to have some air conditioning inside the house-room. In case you don't have any air conditioner, a fan can work, as long as it's not a case of extreme heat – more than 32 degrees Celsius – since it will not cool the air, it will only stir it, which can generate more heat to the body. You can also choose to dampen the sheets you are using in your room a little or even dampen your clothes a little and encourage spending your time indoors or with shade or roofed areas, outdoors.

5. Cool off

If you spent a long time exercising or working in the sun, once you hydrate, refresh your body by taking a good bath with warm water to avoid any temperature shock or if you have a pool nearby, use it with the proper protections mentioned above. Don't forget to wet your head to cool it down and don't expose yourself too much to the sun. The exposure time depends on each person and skin type; it can go from 10 up to 45 minutes.
