SECURITY measures AGAINST INTRUDERS

blog.by C21 Caribbean blog.datep 23/05/2022

If you are looking for a new home to live in or if you are just settling in a new part of the city, we recommend you do the following to make your new home a safer place.

1. Ask neighbors about the area and its safety.

Ask your new or future neighbors about the security of the neighborhood and if there have been or are cases of insecurity in the area.

Ask locals or natives about specific areas of the city to live in, where they recommend and where they don't. They may be a good guide to start with.

2. Adaptations to the property.

Check the desired place to live or the place you already inhabit. Implement improvements to the place, such as lighting dark spaces, trimming places with many bushes or overgrown grass, checking that the house has an emergency exit, at least one; and that it is not obstructed. As well as easily accessible areas, to also place a fire extinguisher, in case you do not have one, at least.

Check the ironwork protections on doors and windows, that they are in good condition. In case the property does not have a some ironworks, invest for its installation or ask the landlord to take care of it.

Inspect the door locks, that they are working properly, and add more if necessary.

3. Install a security system

More and more people choose to install security cameras in their homes, this can be an option that never hurts, since from a mobile device you can control these cameras and see what happens while you are away from home. There are also security alarms, which, when activated, will send an alert to the owner, to a monitoring center or even to the police, to go to the place. Depending on the device, this alarm will detect intruders outside or inside the house; In addition, it will sound so loud that it could scare away thieves.

4. Add a peephole to the front door.

It may sound old-fashioned, but it is very effective. You won't have to open the door all the way to know who's visiting you. If it is a stranger, preferably not open the door. Trust your instincts. You will be surprised by the type of peephole you can find on the market.

5. Do not leave articles in sight.

Caution, if anyone looks into your house through the glass of your door or windows, be careful. We recommend that you do not leave money, jewelry, or valuables that can ignite the mind of a thief. Store all your valuables out of public view and add curtains or wallpaper to your doors and windows that let in natural light but don't allow someone from outside to see into your home. If you have doors and windows with large glass panels, frosted glass can also work to avoid prying views from outside. We make the same recommendation for your car, do not leave valuables or keys inside, to avoid any "temptation" to intruders, in addition to activating the car alarm and using a steering wheel lock stick.

6. Stay alert.

Live quietly, but always alert to any strange sounds, suspicious behavior of neighbors or unknown people. Look around you and do not hesitate to report any suspicious activity or person to the appropriate person.

7. Create a group of neighbors.

Nowadays, it is common for the oldest neighborhoods to have Facebook or WhatsApp groups and also to organize neighborhood meetings to deal with issues of any kind in the neighborhood. Including security. Integrate and keep abreast of useful information and the great work that can be achieved by acting as a team. If the neighborhood is new, you can propose the creation of groups to monitor each other among neighbors and organize some meetings for neighbors, every so often.
